New publication: Differential transcriptome dynamics during the onset of conceptus elongation and between female and male porcine embryos

A better understanding of the transcriptomic changes in porcine preimplantation embryos.

by Dorota Niedzwiecka

Porcine preimplantation embryos undergo rapid differentiation and expansion before attaching to the maternal uterine epithelial surface. To gain more insights into the dynamic transcriptome changes at the onset of elongation and into X-linked gene expression, single female and male porcine embryos of Days 8, 10, and 12 of pregnancy were analyzed using RNA-seq. A high number of genes was differentially expressed across the developmental stages, the majority of which were involved in embryo elongation, development, and embryo-maternal interaction. At each developmental stage, a small number was sex-specifically expressed. X-linked differentially expressed genes dramatically decreased from Day 10 to Day 12. The obtained results show distinct transcriptional differences between female and male embryos and dynamic compensation of the X chromosome in the female embryos. Thus, the findings deepen our understanding of temporary transcriptomic changes during early embryonic development.
